The spot-winged comb jelly, scientifically called Ocyropsis maculata, is a unique species of comb jelly, also known as a ctenophore. This fascinating marine organism is characterized by the presence of four prominent brown spots located on its mouth lobes, which contribute to its distinctive appearance.
You may see a few of these while swimming these days!
The spot-winged comb jellyfish (Ocyropsis maculata) is not poisonous or stinging in the way that true jellyfish are. They are considered harmless to humans and are even prey for some marine animals.
But, you can feel their presence. They can leave some itchy spots on your body.
Spawning, or reproduction, typically occurs during the summer months, with the exact timing depending on factors like water temperature, salinity, and food availability.
Coastal saltwater habitats, such as bays and estuaries like our beautiful Blue Room, provide essential environments where these organisms can be found.
